Bug Description

I tried to edit what applications to be default in my Unbuntu setup, but apperantly it does not apply my new settings through out the system. Eg. I used to have banshee as my default music player, but now I want to use the Movie player to play music. I change the settings in my system settings but still banshee opens every time I try to open a music file.
Same applies for movies, which used to be played in Movie player, but should now open in VLC. They still opens in Movie Player though

Thank you for your bug report, could you give exact steps describing what you do, what formats you use, where you change the handler and what you get and what else you would like to see? The default application only change specific mimetype, i.e the ogg handler for music and the png handler for photos, see bug #876897

Changed in gnome-control-center (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

No worries. Just happy to help make ubuntu better.
I clicked the small circle in the top right corner. Clicked system settings, then system info, shifted to default applications, made my changes and closed the window. My new settings are still the same when i reopen the window and same after reboot. But the changes havent had any effect.

My music is usually mp3's or m4a's
Movies are usually avi's.

I guess these should already be fairly known mimetypes for movies and music.

Finding the default application changer should almost be filed as a bug as well. It is pretty hard to find with out the help of google.

your issues seems to be bug #876897 then, you can right click on a mp3, select properties and go to the open with tab to change the default for that particular mimetype as a workaround

could you confirm that's the case?

I guess the bug is simular in the fact that changing the settings in defaulta applications does not change the settings for default application to open certain mimetype.
If this is the case in bug #876897 then these are duplicate bugs, just with different mimetypes.
Thanks for fast response.
