Bug Description
1. I've created a new user called "test" few years ago (something like ubuntu 8.10 up to ubuntu 10.10). Everthing goes fine.
2. To use Ubuntu 11.10, i've re-installed Ubuntu but i didn't format my /home/ partition. It may be, that i've encrypted during the new installation
3. After some days i wanted to use again the "test" user, which has not been added. So i've add this new user thanks to the gnome-control-
4. I've try to log-in directly after, i've been directed to lightDM (i guess the new loginmanager is now LightDM in Ubuntu 11.10. I've changed nothing about it other than the background).
5. It was impossible
...
6. I've used the shell :
$ sudo -s
# cd ..
# pwd
/home
# chown test -R test/
#
7. I've tried to log-in with test again, and it worked

Thank you for your bug report, I guess that having an user directory existing with a different uid is a corner case though
