Since about 9:00am this morning, the file has now grown to over 20mb in size and continues to grow.
I don't know when this problem started, but this it not the norm...
I feel it's significant enough to log a case against.

You may close out this case... I found a solution to my problem.
This problem is caused by removing pulse-audio from my Ubuntu configuration. Pulse-audio was causing so many problems that I removed it and started using ALSA. In doing this, it caused problems with the gnome-settings- daemon.
Fortunately I found someone who had gnome configured without the pulse-audio configuration and I downloaded my gnome settings daemon and other packages that are built without pulse-audio from another source and it solved my problem completely. No more error messages filling up my file system, and no more wasted cycles writing to the disk drive every 10 seconds.
The gnome-media/ applets/ settings- daemon packages are for users running without PulseAudio. They will disable the Pulse-based volume control and use the "classic" gstreamer-based volume control, which includes an option to configure event sounds. Also, GNOME media-keys will once again work without PulseAudio.
The libcanberra packages are built with only the gstreamer backend. This is ideal for OSS4 users who want event sounds in GNOME.
If you want to run gnome without pulseaudio you will need to download and install the packages from this repository:

I hope this helps someone else down the road.
