Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

While selecting the country (and variant) for the keyboard layout, the dropdown selection box only responds to mouse clicks and arrow keys and 'enter' key. I believe that the dropdown box should also be responding to keypresses of the letter by jumping to the item in the sorted list.

For example, when that country box is selected, I would expect that pressing "U" would have the dropdown box jump to "Ukraine".

I have experienced this in Lucid, but I suspect it also exists in previous versions.

As an additional note, this is also true for selecting by language in the same program.

The system with the scroll indicators on top and at the bottom is not very useful.

Please add a scrollbar and/or make it possible to type in the first letter of a country.
Now for a US keyboard (the most common!) you have to scroll all the way down which takes more then 10 seconds!

This holds true for ALL drop-down-selects within ALL Gnome settings-dialogues, which have a drop-down-select. This is even true for most programs, whenn running within Gnome (e.g. Nautilus).
This is a very basic-feature, every program should be capable of. EVERY drop-down-select ANYWHERE in a UI should be able of select an item by typing in the first letters. What is possible in a browser during website-rendering, should be also possible on a desktop-system. So please give this bug a higher importance, because it is such a terrible usability mistake. I don't want to touch my mouse for tasks like selecting my country from a drop-down–and there are users around this world, who even can't use a mouse. And selecting an entry out of 200 by just using the arrow keys can be quite time-consuming.

upstream says it should be fixed in the current version

which should solve this particular problem."
