Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Just seeing this today (after a boot). Compiz was disabled on boot, but doing compiz --replace starts it up, and it works.

Trying to enable desktop effects returns the desktop effects could not be enabled message.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

Changed in gnome-control-center (Ubuntu):
assignee: nobody → Ubuntu Desktop Bugs (desktop-bugs)
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete
summary: - [karmic] Appearance control panel: Desktop effects could not be enabled
+ Desktop effects could not be enabled

It was reproducible, but I reinstalled Karmic earlier today - if I see
it again, after I do all the updates, I will continue to report.

Basically though, I did nothing -- just did an safe-upgrade, rebooted,
and I could not enable desktop effects any more.

It persisted between reboots, but compiz --replace worked to bring
desktop effects back, so it seemed to be a gnome-appearance-settings
bug.

I have the same problem, with an nvidia graphics card. Running compiz --replace works for me though as well.

Same. Trying to enable compiz via System/Preferences/Appearance results in a X restart. Forcing compiz via 'compiz --replace' works.

9.10 up-to-date, Radeon X1250. I am not sure when it started (one week ago?); to get things back to working state under metacity I was still forced to 'metacity --replace', since metacity seems to be defaulting to --composite nowadays.

For me, to reproduce: all I need is to login.

I'm having the same problem. I'm running Karmic Alpha 3 on a Vaio T-130. The effects worked fine after install. In the "Appearance" I deactivated the effects and now can't activate them anymore, at least not through the "Appearance" dialog.

Like Asif and Jeremy I can get the effects back running compiz --replace but after a shutdown/reboot effects don't work again. I added compiz --replace to the startup programs as a workaround.
