Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

Running jaunty alpha 5 with updates as of today.

Fonts are way too big causing most dialog boxes to be unusable.

Using gnome.

Had to install from the alternate installer cd as the desktop cd also had this problem, so I couldn't click on the buttons on the bottom of the dialog boxes.

Screenshot looks fine to me, and your dpi settings seem to be correct. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/HugeFonts

I think you looked at the wrong screenshot.

"Screenshot of the wrong dpi" shows the problem.

"Screenshot at 96 dpi" is what it's _supposed_ to look like.

I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear.

Marc.

Oh...are you saying it's normal for me to be at 135dpi on a small screen, and to file a bug against every gnome application that doesn't fit my screen?

From the xdpyinfo you provided:
  dimensions: 1024x600 pixels (195x113 millimeters)
  resolution: 133x135 dots per inch

Do the calculation yourself if you don't believe me - divide 1024 pixels by 195 mm and convert to inches.

X is calculating the correct DPI.
What GNOME chooses to do with that is up to it.
X is not bugged here.

what bryce is saying is correct
marc, i think what you need to do is go to system - settings - appearance - fonts - details and change the DPI there (i.e. set it to the correct 133 DPI)!
tell me if that helped
good luck

OK, thanks Bryce. I understand the "chicken and egg" problem here.

I'll file a bug against gnome.

the bug is confusing, what value did you have selected in the capplet? it should be using the xorg detected value in jaunty. is that a new installation or an upgrade?

as explained above, the dpi of 133 is not too high, it's correct. it's the gnome value that's too low. changing title accordingly

My screen is being detected properly at 135 dpi. My gnome capplet correctly shows 135 dpi.

The problem is the combination of high dpi and low resolution screen (1024x600) that is common on netbooks.

The result is most gnome dialog boxes don't fit the screen anymore with a default font setting of 10pts.

Maybe gnome needs to lower the font sizes when a low resolution screen is being used with a high dpi setting. (ie 1024x768 and lower).

I can't even use the desktop cd installer, as all the dialog boxes have the bottom buttons cut off.

Does this make any sense?

I'm starting to doubt the fact that your resolution is actually 1024x600
It doesn't look so in the attached screenshot
