volume control via shortcuts not always possible

Bug Description

when i try to change my volume with the shortcuts on my lenovo n200 3000 and:
1. the start menu is open or
2. one of these menus which are on the top of each window is open or
3. the menu that comes when you right click on your gnome-desktop ("create folder", "change desktop background", etc..) is open

my volume dont change i even dont get the bar showing the volume status

i am using gutsy

thanks for the report, Can you try to reproduce the same with Hardy? that's probably not a g-c-c issue could be a bad mapping of the keys comming from the kernel for example.

I think it is because when one of these menu are open, they take the focus. So you are unable to change the volume.

I find it hard to call it a "bug", but I guess it could be fixed...
