Bug Description

I just upgraded to Ubuntu 22.10 and noticed that some of my apps were no longer in Dark mode including gedit/chrome. When setting the style through the quick menu however, these apps go to Dark mode (presumably due to gtk theme being applied). Likewise for the quick menu itself, setting the style to Dark in gnome-control-settings doesn't change it to dark, it remains light.

see screenshot attached, you will see that when setting the style to Dark in Settings, gedit and the quick menu remain light. I tried to logout in case it was an issue with how the settings are applied but it didn't help. it's also clear that the toggle in the quick menu works as intended so there seems to be an issue with the way gnome-control-center applies the Dark style.

I am also experiencing this bug. I can replicate it by doing the following

1. Have system set to dark theme
2. Open Microsoft Edge
3. Observe that Microsoft Edge is in dark theme
4. Open settings
5. Observe that now Microsoft Edge and Shell theme are in light mode
6. Observe that, in settings, dark theme is still selected
7. Observe that, in the quick panel, dark theme is deactivated
8. Click on dark mode in quick panel
9. Observe that everything is back to dark theme

I had this issue since gnome-control-center 43 came out in the development release of Ubuntu 22.10. I found another post for the same bug and made it a duplicate so it's linked here.

There is a problem when changing the dark mode from the settings, the top bar returns to the light mode

correct, and this issue occurs when the Appearance tab ob th Settings app is activated (or Settings open with Appearance being the previous section) so the issue is likely to sit within the init part of the code of the Appearance tab which seems to be resetting (or do an action which causing the reset) the theme.

Also, if you open Gnome Tweaks, you will see that when selecting Dark via the quick menu, the themes are changed to *-dark". if you do the same thing using Settings, the theme isn't changed at all.

Hi!

For me the way to reproduce this its simple,

1. With dark mode/theme selected.
2. Open the settings app and select "Appearance".
3. The shell change to light/white theme.
4. Select any ascent color.
5. The shell change to dark theme again.

As @Batwam say's the Appearance tab ob the Settings app is involved.

Hi, is there a solution(like an update or an extension or something) this really bothers me a lot

There is, set the style to Dark using the quick menu toggle and don’t use the Appearance tab in Settings. As long as you don’t go in that Settings section, the theme will stay dark. I’ve been doing this since I first noticed the issue and the windows have remained dark.

In addition to what's mentioned above, I noticed some apps are partially in dark mode. The top bar is in light mode, while the rest of the window is in dark mode. See attached screen shot.

Looks like the app itself has a custom dark theme but your window theme is still light. You would probably get something similar if you used a custom dark theme in something like chrome/arduino/libreoffice/… . Do you get a dark top bar when setting to dark in the quick menu?

Just reposted the attachment for my message above. I don't get dark bars when I change to light mode.

I believe it will get fixed. I know how annoying it is when you use an app that automatically changes the theme to white or it changes itself alone.
