Bug Description

Feature proposal: Why do I need to type a command if I want to remove the trash and/or the home folder(s) from the desktop? There should be an option in the Appearance tab:

The new interface:

I did it with this text editor. You should be able to do it faster than me.
I want the feature now!

You don't need to run a command. It can be managed from Extensions -> Desktop icons in Tweaks.

Two settings app to configure my system... Which one do I open and when?
After spending 10min in one app I should spend 10 other minutes in the other to then spend 30 other mins in the web to the install dconf... I feel like settings app need an update... Don't you think so?

TBH I have no firm opinion on the trade off between Settings and Tweaks (the latter not installed by default in Ubuntu). Just wanted to mention that you don't necessarily need to use terminal commands to do it.

Okay, so thanks to mention that :D

Changed in gnome-control-center (Ubuntu):

@joreporter: Since this proposal is upstream in nature, I would suggest that you also submit an upstream issue:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues

If you do, please show the address to the upstream issue in a comment here.

@Gunnar, it's not likely that upstream are going to want to provide a such option since they don't have icons on the desktop, that's an extension which Uubntu uses by default

Ah, my mistake. Then please disregard comment #6.

They are not shown anymore by default in the desktop, as we already have the dock for that.

I feel we could add an option not to show them in the dock in case (as per LP: #1846205), but not to move them back to the desktop IMHO.
There's still dconf-editor for that.

@Marco: To me it looks like the Home folder is still shown on the desktop by default, while the Trash folder is hidden via an ubuntu-settings override.

No need for dconf-editor. Just right click the desktop, select Desktop Icons Settings, and show/hide stuff to your liking.
