I am in the middle of an upgrade to 14.10 (from 14.04). The upgrade process reports all kinds of errors. This was one of them.

Looks like you have some ppa packages installed. Upgrades with ppa's installed are not supported, nor recommended. You should ppa-purge them before upgrading.

Hey Tim

Thanks for your advice. I did not realize I have ppa packages installed.
But you are very likely right. Just one question, if I may: one of the
first messages the "normal" upgrade process gives is that it will "block"
the third party software sources before starting the upgrade process. In
this case that also happened. Should that not have made the upgrade
possible, just like purging the ppa's would? Just a n00b question...
