sound preferences crashes on Roland UA-30 sound card

Bug Description

when I plug in a Roland UA-30 USB-based audio device into my system, I can't open the sound preferences anymore. if the sound preferences window is open at the time I plug in the audio device, it crashes immediately.

this used to work fine earlier.
