I also experienced it in Xubuntu Jaunty. It is independent of the system style or whether files are colourised based on LS_COLORS. I use custom colours to get around this problem.

Still present on Xubuntu Lucid (including all updates to date).
I claim the record for the most files unintentionally deleted due in large part to this bug: 357.
