This can be fixed by installing libgnomevfs2-extra.

workaround:

– install "Filezilla"

– enter connection details to filezilla
  # or any other ftp-client

– establish connection

– VERIFY the shown certificate - mark as trusty
#gnome commander cannot show this window (that's the problem)

– disconnect

enjoy your gnome-commander

Which FTP server? There is no FTP server. Is there a certificate involved in SMB network browsing?

formatc79 could you expand your workaround.

How do you "verify the shown certificate"

how do you get a "shown certificate"

I upgraded my system from 14.04 LTS to 16.04 LTS and the workaround with libgnomevfs2-extra (#2) does not work anymore, I can reproduce the problem (#3 etc.). The "solution" shown in #14 is not working, installing filezilla has nothing to do with SMB. The bug is still present, no workaround does exist.

Here unbuntu 18.04 alpha. All workarounds do not work. Gnome commander is running properly in all other functions. I tried the version 1.8.1 too but no solution.

gnome commender 1.4.8 on Ubuntu 18.04, libgnomevfs2-extra installed. Still have the error and unable to browse samba shares. I see the same error message in the logs: "
(gnome-commander:16996): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: 16:19:02.014: Failed to activate daemon: The name org.gnome.GnomeVFS.Daemon was not provided by any .service files
"

This bug was opened 4 years ago,it is confirmed, still no resolution or workaround. Wonder others have acan use the SMB feature on the software, or maybe nobody cares?

Sebastian Byczkowski (s-byczkowski) wrote :

The problem is missing libsmb.so from libgnomevfs2-extra package!
It is there in trusty(14.04) but it is gone in xenial and further Ubuntu distros.
It is also missing in upstream Debian jessie and futher debian distros, but is present in wheezy package.
You have to ask the package maintainer to put it back as it is needed by GC to browse smbshares.

  * Switch to multiarch.
    + Update installation paths.
+ Remove the daemon and the smb backend, it doesn’t build anymore
and nobody uses it anyway. It avoids adding a new package just for
      the daemon.

If I understand well Sebastian Byczkowski remarks, the problem is the missing libsmb.so from libgnomevfs2-extra package.
The missing functionality of SMB browsing from gnome-commander is a big pain. Is there any workaround to solve the problem? What should I do?

This issue is deprecated since Gnome Commander version 1.14.0, see the release notifications at https://gcmd.github.io/2022/02/05/Release-v1-14-0.html.

Gnome Commander was removed before that from Debian / Ubuntu. It is back at Debian since version 1.14.1. Therefore I would consider this bug as deprecated. It can be closed.
