GNOME Boxes has worked fine for me for years without bridge-utils installed.

I have the same issue since Ubuntu 24.04. I tested in on an AMD and Intel laptop.

In Ubuntu 22.04 / Gnome Boxes 42.x it worked perfectly without libvirt-daemon-system, but in 24.04 / Gnome Boxes 46.x you need the package libvirt-daemon-system in order to create the VM. However you can start a VM without libvirt-daemon-system, but you cannot create VM without libvirt-daemon-system.

I guess the issue began in Gnome Boxes 43.x, because in Debian 11 Stable / Gnome 43, I can create and start a VM without libvirt-daemon-system, but during creation there is a warning that no KVM extensions are installed. However it's just a warning and everything else is working fine there. After installing libvirt-daemon-system in Debian 11, the warning goes away.

I was able to narrow down the bug somewhat.

- Existing VMs can be started without the libvirt-daemon-system package
- you can also create and start a VM with the integrated download manager without the libvirt-daemon-system package

- However if you create a VM with the ISO file only you get the error message "No KVM" if you have no libvirt-daemon-system package. This seems to be a bug in the creation assistent in gnome-boxes.
