Bug Description

Volume keys on my multimedia keyboard seem to control only Master track in ALSA, so for example, when I press mute key, only front speakers are silenced, while rear speakers play at the same volume. Contrary to its name, Master track controls volume of only front speakers; PCM controls volume of all speakers. Volume Control applet also controls Master by default, but its possible to change it in its preferences.

In my opinion multimedia keys should control ALSA track set in preferences of Volume Control applet and it should be PCM by default.

Also in ALSA: "Master" should be renamed to "Front", "Surround" to "Rear" and "PCM" to "Master" (or "Main" to prevent confusion with old settings) - it appears that current names are confusing not only for users, but also for developers. Unfortunately it requirers acceptance and cooperation with upstream ALSA developers. This is also bug #13151.

Hardware:
- Logitech multimedia keyboard (its name varies from region to region - it is the one that comes with MX700 mouse; I am using Logitech Cordless Desktop Pro model in keyboard layout controls);
- nVidia nForce2 SoundStorm (on Abit NF7-S);
- Creative Inspire 5300 5.1 analog speakers.

Something similar happens on my Inspiron 9300. Volume keys control Master which changes the volume of front speakes but the bass remains the same (is controlled with Master Mono which was turned off by default). But PCM controls the volume of all the speakers at the same time.
