Update, ableto replicate problem by following these steps:

Open "Add/Remove.." (gnome-app-install)
Go to the Programming tab, and select Python 2.5, and python 2.6 to read their descriptions (do not un-mark packages)
Click on "Sound & Video" and try to scroll through the apps list on the right hand side.

These steps cause a repeatable crash on my system. Gnome remains stable, other apps are unaffected.
