      an error now when there are no alternatives left. The test doesn't
      return 0 lines anyway, so the check doesn't work. This stops the prerm
      script exiting with an error on removal (LP: #398213).

i think we need to do it differently. The --remove-all is essential to workaround dpkg bugs.

if the error code is the problem we can do something like;

update-alternatives --list flashplugin-... | wc -l || true

to check whether there are no alternatives left.

How am I supposed to upgrade this package if it can't be removed?

if you install swfdec then the broken uninstall script in gnash will not fail. that lets you remove/upgrade gnash

There is no reason that the upgrade should fail now anyway. The prerm script from the new version should run if the old one fails, which should handle the upgrade case.

Closing this now, as the --remove-all doesn't seem to be needed anymore.

Sorry guys, but the problem still exists...

Here is the issue I get now:
