Bug Description

Binary package hint: gmail-notify

Once I upgraded to the Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick beta, gmail-notify no longer reports new mail, EXCEPT when it initially checks during launch.

It does not seem to check automatically, nor when I right-click and choose "Check now." (Left) clicking on the tray icon raises the notification thing, but it just says no new mail.

This was working fine on 10.04, but since the 10.10 beta, it does not work on either of my computers running 10.10.

Again, when gmail-notify initially launches (at startup for me), it DOES notify me of new mail, but never again.

Exactly the same issue here. I did a fresh install of 10.10, and it only checks for mail when it's initially launched. Very strange that this wasn't picked up before release.

Well, I've been using this software for about 3 years now. But thanks to it being completely broken in 10.10, and with no fix, I've now moved across (ad gotten used to) to another package, and can't see myself going back again!

Same problem here. The oldest 'new' bug for this program is dated 2008, so I must assume it is unmaintained at this point. JD: what program did you switch to?

(although I'm not JD) I ended up switching over to gnome-gmail-notifier, which works very well, even with Google Apps accounts and uses the built-in notification system. The only thing I miss from gmail-notify is the ability to launch a custom command when the icon is clicked (ie to open Chrome in "app" mode to access Gmail), but I just put a custom shortcut on my gnome panel for that.

Jim: I moved over to the same gnome-gmail-notifier package as Michael has. It took me a week or two to get used to it, but I think I now much prefer it.

I'm still amazed that this package got dumped into the 10.10 repositories with no testing whatsoever. I too am going to assume that its now been abandoned, which is a shame really.
