I don't know what the current guidelines are about this for Ubuntu packages. I (the upstream maintainer) have no objection to it.

So does anyone know what the general Ubuntu policy for this is?

Murray, if you use LP to track your bugs, you may consider emailing an ubuntu-devel list (probably ubuntu-devel-discuss).

Otherwise you may need to get in contact with LP developers about their API for filing bugs.

Connor, I (the upstream maintainer) use the upstream GNOME bugzilla to track Glom bugs, though I try to monitor Ubuntu's bug reports too, to save you the time of sending them upstream.

I assume that any "File a bug" menu item would file a bug in the distro's bug tracker. I don't want to know how to do it. I want to know if it is done for other packages. I don't think it is generally done.

Some/many applications allow bugs to be filed through Apport, for example, in Mozilla Thunderbird in Ubuntu you can go to Help->Report a Bug, or in other apps: Help->Report a Problem
Some other examples I can see immediately: pidgin, xchat, Calculator, gconf, gnome-terminal, etc (you get the idea). So yes, it is done for other packages, I would assume it is up to you if you want to add the functionality.

AFAIK, Apport only directs its bugs at Launchpad, but don't quote me on that.
