Reproducer without changing /etc:

cat > /etc/hesiod.conf << EOF
lhs=.hs
rhs=.devel.redhat.com

HESIOD_CONFIG=hesiod.conf getent -s hesiod group 0 0

I'm reverting the upstream commit which introduced this bug.
