Installing 12.04, boot record put on wrong disk

Bug Description
I installed 12.04 on a machine where at the time of the install a USB disk (that itself is bootable, though I was installing from a USB stick) was plugged in. Installation went fine, except that the boot/grub bit was put on the external disk rather than the disk I was installing to. As a result, I can only boot now if the external disk is plugged in...
