Bug Description

Just installed Oneiric Ocelot and cannot Login as Administrator. Once correct password is typed using Administrator as user, screen goes black and then returns to login. Password is correct as I have not changed it for a long time and, as Guest, I can provide password to check for updates and the password is accepted. As Guest I cannot access external drives, etc. Also, the system won't let me shutdown - I must disconnect the power.

Exactly the same problem.
Ubuntu server with GUI on top. Worked perfectly with Natty. Failed on upgrade to Ocelot. Had problem with 'waiting for network configuration', which I solved using well documented patch.
I have installed gnome as well as Unity (after problem arose) and login as administrator just loops back to login screen. Choosing recovery console or gnome makes no difference. Other users login no problem, but have few privileges.
Can login to command prompt as admin no problem.
Don't know if it's relevant, but sometimes it flashes nvidia logo briefly before looping back to login.

just added new user (dik3) using webmin and told it to use /home/dik as its home directory (user dik is problem). dik3 shows same looping problem - it seems problem is a setting in ~/ somewhere.

Just added all the groups that dik (root) has to dik2 privileges and dik2 can still log in OK. Privs are:

adm, admin, cdrom, dialout, kvm, libvirtd, lp, lpadmin, plugdev, sambashare, vboxusers.

Even with these privileges, dik2 cannot mount USB drives ('Not Authorized').

If you deliberately enter wrong password for dik (root user), login screen correctly says 'invalid password'. On entering correct p/w, login screen just loops.

Found a work-around. I have GDM installed as well as lightdm. I typed:

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm

to tell the system to use GDM instead of lightdm. Everything now works, but I still need permanent fix so I can stay 'standard' with lightdm.

Many thanks for that.
