Can you please provide the full command that you tried? I can't reproduce this here, it works when I try:
$ gksu --user otheruser id

Ah i see how it happens.

Reproduce by:
1) Alt+f2 to get the run box and enter gksuexec and click on Run
2) Enter a command e.g. gedit and a username that isn't root (even your own username makes the error occur) and click on OK

An error dialog then gives you that message.

I should add that I'm quite new to patching ubuntu packages and that debian/patches/02_ubuntu_gksuexec.diff needs to be applied before my patch as mine fixes an omission from that patch. Thanks.

For root:
- always use sudo
(Your patch would show a dialog that requests the administration password, if the user is not in the admin group, Andy)

For non root:
- if the user is in the admin group use sudo
- otherwise use su

Does have a working patch insure that it will be applied before final Dapper launch? Or will I (and many other people) be forced to apply this patch to simply get a simple function working properly. Thank you, by the way, for all the help.

John; don't worry. As far as the patch is a very little one I'm sure one of the devs will check and upload it. The problem is there is a lot of patches to review on the bug tracker and there are only a few devs so you may have to wait a few days before the patch is uploaded.

This problem is fixed with the upload of gksu_1.3.7-0ubuntu7. Please reopen if you still see problems after the upgrade.
