Gimp crashed because of 2.4GB tiff?

1. converted that adobe photoshop "huge file format" (.pbs? or smth like that) into .tiff with psd
2. saved on ntfs filesystem
3. copied data to ext4 filesystem
4. opened file in Gimp
5. clicked "okay" to the warning with the uninterpretable colorspace (smth printindustry specific ... maybe that was the issue?)
6. created new layer
7. attemted to move the primary layer with the "Move" tool (the desired tiff file which _i_ should /_i_ be accessable as layers ...?
8. Experienced Crash
