Feature request: save history

The Gimp should have the ability to save the history of an edited file. This would let you reproduce a set of actions to get a desired output if you've forgotten how you've achieved an unsurprisingly desirable output. Also this would be helpful if software projects were sharing or proposing artwork. If this feature could not be fully integrated, then maybe a text output would be sufficient.

Can we just store the data structures/objects used for each of the undo options into a separate file alongwith the base image and then give the user an option of loading this prior to loading the saved final version of the image ?This feature itself should be enabled from Edit->preference I would think.

From the bug:

We want this for GIMP, too - but someone has to write the code for it.
Right now, it is not as easy as "just save the undo history into the file" if
you're not keen on having multi-gigabyte XCF files :)
