Bug Description

When trying to use menu (File - Edit - Select - etc) it takes at time over 10 sec to appear and further 3-5sec to load the drop down menus. Often when switching from another program the previous program is still there. This does not happen in other programs. This happens with one small file and with many big files open in Gimp. Gimp used to be nice and fast, even in 13.10. Not sure which update caused it to slow down, been running 13.10 beta for a while.

Shortcuts work just fine, I just can't remember them all and therefore has to use the menu.

Same here, on 13.10 64-bit. It worked great in 13.04, then I did a clean install of Ubuntu 13.10, leaving only /home partition intact, and GIMP has had these menu problems ever since.

same here, too. Did an upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 and all the menus are very slow (gimp, libreoffice, etcetera). the ugly solution is to disable the global menu stuff from unity.

Same here on clean install - right click menus work fine.

Same here, it starts fast, but it degrades over time until the system becomes unusable and I have to restart. You can see trails of menus opening if you click many times.

No crashes/freezes, thanks to 8 GBytes of RAM most likely, but I have the exact same issue and the menus take forever to load and about an entire second to render.

I also checked if it makes a difference if I'm editing a huge file or something blank. It doesn't seem that way.

This also appeared with 13.10 - I'm on 64bit too.

Same situation here. I have a rather powerful PC: QuadCore 3.2 GHz, 8GB Ram, Nvidia 1024 MB, 64bit system as well. The range goes from "3 second delay" to "20 seconds and longer" while showing fragments of other windows' menus. The whole problem seems to only inflict GIMP and I don't notice any influence on the rest of the system. Also I get the impression that it gets worse the longer GIMP is opened, no matter how big the file is that GIMP has to handle.

Hmm not sure : I don't get high CPU usage when waiting for the menu to render.

I also have this issue. The menus are annoyingly slow. It appears to worsen depending on GIMP's workload. However, they may not be related. I'm assuming it's the way GIMP allocates, or interacts, with system memory. Looking forward to the fix as this is a key tool for me.

I also have the same, or at least very similar issue, when using Sublime Text 2 (build 2221).

I agree with wollypigs, this is not a dup of #1199877. I don't see the CPU problem, but I see the slow menu issue ALL the time.

I am suffering the same symptoms as woollypigs. Slow menu response, slow rendering. Ubuntu 13.10 fully updated with GIMP 2.86.

I get this behavior on Raring, 13.04. The pull down menus from any app take longer and longer to display and respond to the mouse. All I do is log out and log back in, and then the delay 'goes away' and my pull down menus are once again responsive.

Can confirm sluggish menu. I was running Debian Jessie with XFCE and Gimp ran smoothly. Switched to Debian Jessie + Gnome and menus are very slow to show.
