Bug Description

Binary package hint: libgeomview-1.9.4

Description: Ubuntu hardy (development branch)
Release: 8.04
2.6.24-16-rt (AMD64, x2, 5200+, 4 GB)

In Hardy Heron (AMD64, latest version) geomview works only if small models are viewed. Large models lead to segmentation faults:

A polyhedron with 17000 triangles: geomview bunny_17636_hull.list
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

or

A collection of 8200 balls: geomview dragon_head_67217_e_0.01.cov_spheres.list
Segmentation fault (core dumped)

The same examples worked in Gutsy Gibbon on a 32bit machine (I think it was geomview 1.8.1). The segfaults
occur in Hardy Heron (64) regardless if the regular package is used or if I compile it from the sources. If 1.9.4 is
not stable I see not reason to upgrade to 1.9.4 since I have not encountered any new features or improved stability.

Btw: I have also encountered that one can not make spheres transparent (using 'aT') anymore in version 1.9.4. It
worked in 1.8.1.

Best
Bernhard

Can somebody confirm that geomview 1.9.4 crashes when the file bunny_17636_hull.list is opened?

Pretty dead here, hm?

Some users of the Geomview mailing list have confirmed the bug. According to my tests it exists in all 1.9.x
versions for x<5 (also if compiled under Cygwin). Geomview 1.8.1 does not compile on newer Linux installations
but the unreleased version 1.8.2rc9 (available on sourceforge) compiles under Hardy Heron and seems to work
well. So this is a workaround until the bug is fixed. Hope this information will help anybody.

It looks like this is a known issue with 1.94, and is fixed in cvs. Unfortunately, a 1.9.5 release in the near future seems unlikely. Here's the thread about it:
http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?<email address hidden>&forum_name=geomview-users

I built from cvs on hardy amd64 and verified that the "bunny" opened fine.

Not sure where this can go from here. My assumption is that a cvs build is possible but would probably need to happen upstream in Debian first.

Confirmed still happens on Quantal's 1.9.4-3
