Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

If I try the same now with kernel 2.6.27-11 64 bit I get a different error. The method has changed very slightly as there is a new button displayed when I preview the document to be printed. If I click on Close Preview and then close gedit I get either of the following messages:
$ gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
** (gedit:6068): WARNING **: Failed to create file '/root/.gnome2/gedit/gedit-page-setup.J3PZOU': No such file or directory
** (gedit:6068): WARNING **: Failed to create file '/root/.gnome2/gedit/gedit-print-settings.MUPZOU': No such file or directory
and
$ gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
** (gedit:6103): WARNING **: Failed to create file '/root/.gnome2/gedit/gedit-page-setup.RHFTOU': No such file or directory
** (gedit:6103): WARNING **: Failed to create file '/root/.gnome2/gedit/gedit-print-settings.OLBTOU': No such file or directory
These messages are displayed in terminal as I close gedit.

could you try in jaunty? does creating the .gnome2 and gedit directory workaround the issue?

In Jaunty kernel Linux kevin-dt1b 2.6.28-11-generic #35-Ubuntu SMP Wed Mar 18 21:55:34 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux this error does not occur at all. I haven't needed to make any new directories. I'll recheck in Intrepid to see if the error has been fixed.

I now get a new unrelated problem in Jaunty with gedit see bug #346293.
In Intrepid I still get the error still with 2.6.27-11 kernel (latest updates today installed). Sebastien, you were correct in assuming that there was a missing directory. In my /root/.gnome2 directory there is no gedit directory, but there is a gedit-2 file. As soon as I made the new /root/.gnome2/gedit directory the fault was cured. My /root/.gnome2 directory now is as follows:
root@kevin-dt1b:~/.gnome2# ls -l
total 28
drwx------ 2 root root 4096 2008-11-04 19:28 accels
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8818 2009-03-21 11:28 accelsgedit
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2009-03-21 11:31 gedit
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 74 2009-03-21 11:28 gedit-2
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 164 2009-03-21 11:28 gedit-metadata.xml
