Hoary - gedit no longer open files in tabs by default

Bug Description

In Gnome 2.8 gedit would open files in new tabs if a copy of gedit was
already running when opening the files via double clicking them in
nautilus. So if i open three files, i get one copy of gedit running
with 3 tabs, one for each file.

In Gnome 2.9.x/2.10 gedit 2.9.6 no longer does this. It opens up a new
copy of itself for every file I try to open via double clicking the
files in nautilus. So if i open three files i get three copies of
gedit running each with one file open.

This seems to only happen when opening the file via double clicking them
in nautilus.

as per a discussion on the ubuntu-users list, maybe we just need a pref to allow
gedit
to behave the way the user prefers.

I'm using Hardy up-to-date and it seems to me that this bug is back: try to open twice the same text file, from nautilus or cli does not matter, and two instances of gedit will be launched.

More generally, in Hardy gedit seems to open each file in a new window even though the --new-window option is not used. Is this a bug or a change in behaviour?
In any case, this behaviour is creating a problem not only with same files opened many times, but also when trying to use xdvi and gedit for inverse search of .tex sources.
