Actually it doesn't fail to build, but gives only a warning at the end:

Function `gdk_gc_new' implicitly converted to pointer at drawatoms.c:63

Our automated build log filter detected the problem(s) above that will
likely cause your package to segfault on architectures where the size of
a pointer is greater than the size of an integer, such as ia64 and amd64.

This is often due to a missing function prototype definition.

Since use of implicitly converted pointers is always fatal to the application
on ia64, they are errors. Please correct them for your next upload.

Nelson, such warnings are intentionally converted into hard failures on Ubuntu amd64.

This bug was fixed in the package gdpc - 2.2.5-1ubuntu1

gdpc (2.2.5-1ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Drop -DGDK_DISABLE_DEPRECATED until such time as gdpc is converted to
use Cairo for drawing (LP: #770768).
