Having this issue intermittently with Geforce GTX 1050 Ti. Nvidia Driver 390 was installed using
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics- drivers/ ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nvidia-384 nvidia-settings
NVidia Driver 384 seems to be a transitional package https:/ /askubuntu. com/questions/ 1078964/ driver- for-ubuntu- 18-04-lts- that-supports- gtx-1050- ti-graphics- card/1078973
