Can you clarify what you mean in "flickerty with verbos page script"? Does that mean a VT is visible for a while (black background)?

This bug can be marked as invalid. Installing lightdm seemed to have solved the problem.

What was happening is that after 4.13 kernel/reboot I got a blackscreen with a coulum of verbose charS the was flashing from top down, bottom up. (the rows of characters were flashing like a scroll like it was truing to force itself to boot into gdm3. I can re-install gdm and reboot and see if I can emulate.

Stand by please.

If you watch the top, left hand corner you will see one flash and then the cursor blinking between plymouth and gdm. Sometimes there is no flickerty. Sometimes there is full screen flickerty sometimes only cursor. In this video you will see one small flash of verbose code in top left , then cursor flash about 7 times.

I'm told that the *dm tells plymouth (the boot progress screen) to stop. So that's probably what the flicker is related to.
