Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Upon upgrading to Edgy and a reboot, gdm was using a plain theme, which was not any Ubuntu theme. The "theme" made it look like it was "themeless" (probably what you get when no proper theme is loaded).

Following error in a popup (before login window - which too was "themeless"):
"No servers were defined in the configuration file and XDMCP was disabled - This can only be a configuration error. GDM has started a single server for you. You should log in and fix the configuration. Note that automatic and timed logins are disabled now."

Steps to "fix" this:
System -> Administrations -> Login Window -> Security -> Configure X-Server -> Add/Modify and add a server (example: VT=1, Server=Standard).

Hello AgenT,
To start off with,
Could you attach your /etc/gdm/gdm.conf and /etc/gdm.conf-custom?

Thanks,

Hello,

Please note that I selected to use the default gdm.conf-custom file when dpkg-reconfigure was started during dist-upgrade. The current conf files are not problematic, which probably means they are not useful. However, I keep backups which means that I do have my gdm conf files from *before* I upgraded.

I am including 4 files in all: 2 current, 2 backup.

I do have one question: In gdm.conf-custom, it mentions that gdm.conf should no longer be used. But without gdm.conf gdm does not start. Why is that?

$ gdm --version
GDM 2.16.1

I hope this helps.

UPDATE: I do not know how to upload more that one attachment per comment. If someone can tell me how to do this, I would appreciate it.

I cannot confirm this because I cannot upgrade to Edgy again (due to having Edgy installed), but today's update to gdm added a server to the list like it was supposed to all along. The cause of this bug was no server was added/listed.

My workaround entailed adding a server.

I know that the new gdm update adds another server because after today's update (I made sure to have the package overwrite my config files) and gdm restart, two servers on two VT's were started. Checking System -> Administrations -> Login Window -> Security -> Configure X-Server showed a second server listed. This should mean that gdm is now properly configured and adds a server.

Consider this bug closed if you wish.
