This bug leads to random GDM freezes. The freeze occurs when I start a new application through Gnome's application launcher. It is possible that this bug affects 9.10 as well. I assume but do not really know that it is caused by the gdm package.

The .xsession-errors file looks like this, I guess only the last few lines are relevant.

I really do not follow why something which causes the need for a restart of the window manager with data loss etc. is rated as Importance: Low.

After a cold boot, i open a terminal then start synaptic via the menu, and get this error written inside the terminal

I am seeing the same error message when I click superkey to get the HUD search-"window" in 12.04.1.

Note; this bug has been reported against gdm, but quantal use lightdm. So i think gdm cant be blame, but synaptic.

I get this error reported against a bunch of different programs as you can see from log excerpt. my .xsession-errors file is huge and I have trouble with X that I try to get to the bottom of: bug 1087535

As i get the same issue daily since a long long time, i think its coming from either synaptic or more probably from metacity (or one of their dependencies).
But that report is so old, and gdm (no more used by default), unity-2d (that package(s) cant be blamed, i dont use it) and metacity is on the way to be dropped on the next releases.

@Rolf : what you can do is to clean your system as much as you can (deborphan/bleachbit) and delete some borked config folders (they are cleanly recreated on the next boot) like: .gconf, .local, .config, .gnome2 ; and tweak logrotate if you get too huge log files.
