Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

If I enter the wrong password at login, gdm seems to restart, when I enter the correct password Gnome starts (as expected). Then when I try to shutdown the machine (using any of the shutdown menu items) it goes back to the login screen. It won't shut down anymore. Only way is "sudo shutdown -h now".

I can confirm this behavior.

Actually, I think there a two separate bugs here:
1) gdm restarts after entering wrong password
2) ubuntu won't shut down after logged in

Does it really restart directly after entering the wrong password, or do you have to select your username again and then it restarts?
If the latter is the case, then this is a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gdm/+bug/503314

@Per Ångström: I think they are related, because if you enter the username correctly the first time, you can shut down the machine; only if you enter a wrong password (before entering a correct password) ubuntu won't shut down.

@Kai Jauch:You could be correct: I click the username enter the wrong password --> authentication failure; I click the username again --> gdm restarts.

I just did the following:
1) Restart the computer and in gdm choose Restart: no problem.
2) On the restart, log in (no password error) and immediately log out, choose Restart in gdm: nothing happens.
