when changing /apps/gdm/simple-greeter disable_user_list in true, still gives a user list in gdm at startup

Bug #464957 reported by johanbondt on 2009-10-30
This bug affects 3 people
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
gdm (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gconf-editor

using Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala
gconf-editor 2.28.0-0ubuntu1
The value /apps/gdm/simple-greeter disable_user_list was changed in true, so I expected no user list.
The user list is still there.

Thank you for your bug report, how did you change the key and for which user? did you restart gdm after the change?

affects: gconf-editor (Ubuntu) → gdm (Ubuntu)
Changed in gdm (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Incomplete

I can also confirm this bug.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Run gconf-editor
2) Set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list to true (checked)
3) Reboot computer
4) At login screen the know user list is still shown

gconftool -v

gconftool --get /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list

Sebastien Bacher (seb128) wrote :

you need to run the command with the gdm user, sudo -u gdm gconf-editor...

Changed in gdm (Ubuntu):
status: Incomplete → Invalid

This works for me:

sudo -u gdm gconftool --get /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list
sudo -u gdm gconftool --type bool --set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true
sudo -u gdm gconftool --get /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list

I've run the configure command

sudo -u gdm gconftool-2 --set --type boolean /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

and the user list disappears for a while, but it keeps coming back! It seems to me as though updates are erasing my settings. In /var/log/apt/term.log, for example, I find this before the user list comes back.

Preparing to replace gdm 2.28.1-0ubuntu2 (using .../gdm_2.28.1-0ubuntu2.1_i386.deb) ...
Unpacking replacement gdm ..

Does this mean there is something wrong with the deb package, or what?
