Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

Ubuntu Karmic (Beta Release Branch) 9.10

While the login has had several improvements it also has a critical regression issue. You cannot have the login configured (as far as I can tell) to only give the old username and password option without supplying users to click.

This becomes a massive issue when the valid users for the machine total to over 3000 due to networked login options. This is a problem that used to occur with the Fast User Switching applet as well, but that could be disabled.

It is critical that Karmic has the capacity to have a login screen configured to only show
Username:
Password:

Can be disabled from gconf-tool2 via setting /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list to true.

This should be an option in the control panel for Login.

This method also provides a poor user experience in comparison to previous versions of Ubuntu.
