Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

My system keyboard layout as defined in /etc/default/console-setup is "gb" - however the gdm greeter defaults to "USA".

I originally reported this as a confirmation of bug 401047, but that ended up being about variants only, whereas my problem is that not even layout configuration is propagated to gdm.

Can you please check if "lshal" has the correct layout? (input.xkb.layout). If you are unsure, please do

  lshal > /tmp/hal.txt

and attach /tmp/hal.txt here. Thanks!

The input.xkb.* properties are present in hal as expected. I'll attach hal.txt anyway

Hmm. I was going to dispute that this is of "Low" importance, but given the classification rules on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance, that is correct. Still, it's a pretty major wart in many people's first experience of Karmic....

there is no indication that many users are having that issue since there is no other bug about the issue

Could it be some leftover gconf settings from previous buggy gdm versions? Can you please remove/move aside /var/lib/gdm/.gconf/apps/gdm/simple-greeter/%gconf.xml and see whether it still happens?

No luck I'm afraid. Deleting that file (even when making sure to do it whilst gdm is stopped) merely results in it being recreated with the same keymap settings when gdm next starts.

I've also this bug.

I can confirm this as well; fresh install of Karmic on a new build, so it's not due to a misbehaving leftover conf file.

Why is this incomplete now?

I have the same bug. Fresh install with the latest Karmic 9.10 build fixes the issue temporarily. I'm not sure but I believe this issue occurs after I install Wine on Ubuntu.
