Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

gdm 2.27.4-0ubuntu5 (karmic)

I'm not sure if it's gdm fault, but given the keyboard layout problems after login in the past, I assume so.
My keyboard configuration in /etc/default/console-setup is:
XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="de"
XKBVARIANT="nodeadkeys"
XKBOPTIONS="compose:menu"
I've also the same configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Yet after auto-login to gnome I only get a german layout with deadkeys. Using gnome-keyboard-properties I can reset it to my configured layout but it's needs to be done after every login once.
For some reason "compose:menu" seems to be set correctly at login.

thank you for your bug report, do you get the issue if you don't use autologin but enter your login and password rather?

Changed in gdm (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low

I've checked this right now (de-activated auto-login and restarted gdm) and the same happens after login: I've got a german keyboard but with dead keys. Reseting the layout in gnome-keyboard-properties brings back the nodeadkeys variant.
This is cumbersome as I use the terminal much and ~ is part of the dead keys.

On my laptop (i386) I don't see this problem (I get a german keyboard layout with no dead keys after login). Doing a quick compare of some config files (/etc/default/console-setup and /etc/X11/xorg.conf) don't show any difference in the keyboard layout configuration.
My desktop is amd64 and when looking at bug #416917 an other amd64 seems to have a similar problem.

Any hints how to figure out why my laptop (i386) doesn't show this problem while my desktop (amd64) shows it are highly welcome.
