Binary package hint: gdm
Gdm 2.26 that is new in karmic is requiring gnome-session as a pure dependency
Problem is that with a xubuntu is very annoying, gnome-session is taking the default way but more important now the metapackage gnome-session has grow up and includes nautilus, gnome-control-center and many others packages
gnome-session must be put as a "suggested" not depency I think |

GDM 2.26 in Karmic depends gnome-session on gnome-session which pulls in most of gnome which not only causes the Xubuntu CDs to be over sized but to set the default session to gnome.
GDM should be updated, as per discussion in #ubuntu-devel, to be depend on gnome-session-bin instead of gnome-session, metacity | x-window-manager, and should recommend gnome-settings-daemon | xfconf. Furthermore, /usr/share/gdm/autostart/LoginWindow/metacity.desktop should be patched (and probably renamed) to launch x-window-manager instead of metacity directly. |
