Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdm

When two users are logged in at the same time, and one logs out, gdm drops back to the locked-screen dialog of the other user. However, this dialog box only works to unlock the screen- nothing happens unless a password is entered and and "unlock" clicked. If another user wants to log in while keeping that other session locked, they can't.

I can replicate this behavior on two different machines, but I'm not sure what all information I should attach. Help, please?

I forgot to mention, I'm running into this bug on Hardy, no data on Gutsy or previous.

I'd like to confirm this.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Have multiple users
2) Login as one of them
3) Switch users and login as someone else
4) Logout from the second user

a) You will be incorrectly taken to the screen lock display for the first user. I believe this is a bug in itself, you should be taken to the login screen so a different user can login.

...but more importantly

b) At the screen lock it isn't possible to click any of the buttons 'leave message' 'switch user' 'cancel' 'unlock'. Clicking them has no effect.

So the workaround if you DO want to login as a different user to the screen locked user, you have to first know their password and login as them. Then switch users or logout from their account.

A slightly easier workaround is to just press alt+s at the locked screen.

Both elements of this bug still occur for me:

1) On logout if 2 or more users are logged in I am returned to the locked screen dialog instead of the gdm-greeter.
2) When I reach the locked screen dialog through the steps above it is not possible to click any of the buttons. Workarounds if you don't want to log in as the locked screen user are to know their password(!) and log in as them them immediately logout/switch users or to press alt+s (many new users won't have this latter option though as they won't know about keyboard shortcuts).

If logout would be followed by gdm-greeter, there would not be an option to return to a session. Anyway, I can't reproduce the second part. I mean all the buttons work in gnome-screensaver (Version: 2.24.0-0ubuntu2) unlock dialog. (gdm Version: 2.20.8-0ubuntu3). I am using Intrepid.

I can confirm this in Jaunty. If 2 users are logged in, and 1 logs out, the locked screen dialog only allows you to type a password to unlock it. The buttons are locked, i.e. Leave Message, Unlock, etc.
Marking as Confirmed - Medium Importance - medium severity with core application.

Confirmed in Karmic with gdm 2.27.4-0ubuntu11. The only thing you can do is enter your password and hit enter, none of the buttons are clickable.

gdm 2.28.1-0ubuntu2

When second user logout the first user's session appears without password check.
The workaround is to enable screensaver. But I do not need screensaver.

This should've been marked Triaged by myself, as there should be enough information here for a developer to take a look at this and debug it. Thank you guys.

A refinement (in 10.10 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu) is that whilst the dialog is locked for mouse input, it is still possible to TAB around to action the buttons which otherwise are not accessible via the mouse.
