GDM login box does not resize correctly to accomodate long banner messages

Bug Description
This occurs in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS under package gdm 3.0.4-0ubuntu15.3
I have configured banner_message_text with gconftool-2 to a standard corporate login banner.
On restart of gdm the login box is compressed, so very little is visible. I can log in, but blindly.
I expected the login box to accomodate the longer banner message and still show me the login textbox and buttons.
