Bug Description

I installed a gdm theme from www.gnome-look.org. I selected that gdm theme to use, and "Selected Only" was already chosen. When I next logged in though, a totally different gdm theme was used. Checking the control panel again, it was set to "Random from Selected". I changed it back and now it seems to work fine.

Thank you for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? Do you have easy steps to trigger the bug whenever you want?

I am using Ubuntu Feisty 64bit. I don't know if the bug shows up a second time, but here are the steps I did after I had done a fresh install:

1. Download a gdm theme from gnome-look.org
2. Open "Login Window" under System -> Administration
3. Click "Local" tab
4. Click "Add"
5. select downloaded file and click "Install"
6. Select the radio button next to the newly installed gdm theme. Note that it is still set on "Selected Only"
7. For this step, either reboot the computer or simply log out (I can't remember if it does it for both)
8. You will see a completely random gdm theme
9. Login and re-open the "Login Window" prefs
10. You will see "Selected Only" has been changed on its own to "Random from selected"
11. Change it back to "Selected Only"
12. That gdm theme will now show up from then on

I will install another gdm theme and report back if it does it again or not, or if its just that first custom installed gdm theme.

I added another gdm theme and it seems to still be working well, so it's apparently an issue w/ a fresh install that doesn't crop up again after manually setting it back to "Selected Only"

to test on a new install, might be a one time bug due to something which went wrong, without extra informations or a way to trigger it we can't really work on it

marking incomplete, having steps to trigger the bug would be nice to work on it

I have encountered this problem also. I normally use the "Happy GNOME with Browser" theme with multi-user setups. In gdmsetup, if I change to it from Human (by check box) and log out, I end up with a different one in gdm. Logging in and bringing up gdmsetup again shows that instead of the one I selected, Circles and Happy GNOME are selected with the Theme setting set to random.

Hi there
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the development version of Ubuntu, Hardy Heron?

Thanks in advance.

As much as I hate to reopen a ticket, this is still an issue; I can't believe anyone else hasn't brought it up. I have ran into this problem on a slew of different hardware setups since Feisty and including Hardy. Steps to reproduce are exactly how jclemon describes. This may be an upstream bug in gdmsetup, however I've only noticed it under Ubuntu. If any other information is needed please ask.

I've also had this issue in Hardy, and it's always with a fresh install; once I've reset it to Selected Only, the problem never re-appears. I will look for a bug in Gnome's database.

I just encountered it again in Hardy but I also was having a crash issue with gdm. I ran gdm-setup the first time out of XFCE and gdm segfaulted dropping me back to a VT. I restarted gdm and tried again. After selecting Happy Gnome with Browser and logging out, gdm died again and didn't restart. I launched gdm again and got a different login screen ("Happy Gnome" I think). After loading up XFCE again and checking gdm-setup, it had switched to "Random from Selected". After setting it back to "Selected Only" and HG w/B, it retained the setting upon the next login. I didn't have any additional gdm crashes after that even though I tried to reproduce them.

This bug is still here on Intrepid. It is simple to reproduce : on a fresh install, just oepn gdmsetup, change the theme to Human List, then reboot :
The theme will be Cercles and the Combobox will be on "Random from Selected". I had already this bug on hardy x86 and I have it again on Intrepid x64.

Another thing : it happens only the first time you change the theme. If you setup the theme once the bug encountered, it will work.
