gtk2-engine switches to gtk1-engine when installing

Bug #67694 reported by Ralf Nieuwenhuijsen on 2006-10-23
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
gdebi (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gdebi

Steps to reproduce:

1. Use a theme where the GTK1 engine is very different from the GTK2 engine (like Glossy P which i am using)

2. Open a .deb file so gdebi launches. Perhaps something from
3. Notice how the interface is using the GTK2 engine
4. Click on 'INSTALL'
5. Notice how the interface of gdebi switches to a GTK1 engine
6. When installation is finished, it doesn't change back either.

Its not that big a deal and it might be due to the synaptic parts using gtk1 instead of gtk2. But it is noticeable.

In light of this why is synaptic and update-manager GTK1. There are the only gtk1-apps I have. Ah well, i'll post a wish-list bug about this someday.

Thanks for your bugreport.

The effect you see here is that gdebi has to run as root for the actual install. This switches the theme because it switches the user. We would have to add something to gksu to preserve the theme.

Doesn't the root user use GTK2 at all?

I think for about 90% of the users, this problem can be eliminated by setting the gtk1 and gtk2 theme of the root user to the same default as we do for ordinary users.

If they change their theme they will still notice this, but not that many people actually change their theme.

Not sure why I'm getting email updates from this bug, but whatever.

Everything is using GTK2. The other theme you are seeing is the default GTK2 theme. Note that this is different from the theme that is set as the default for your user account (clearlooks.) You can basically think of it as unthemed.

It might or might not be possible to make programs running as root always use clearlooks, that is a possibility for "fixing" Bug #24280, which this is a duplicate of.
