Builds do not work with gcc 4.3 it should be build with gcc 4.2 (and g++ 4.2)

"Builds do not work with gcc 4.3" - the gdal package in Debian doesn't build-depend on gcc-4.2. This is not a candidate for syncing if the package needs to be changed to specify a non-default compiler; unsubscribing ubuntu-archive.

(BTW, the default compiler in Debian unstable is also gcc-4.3 -- so how does this package work there?)

Look on gcc-4.3 i get this error while compiling:
usr/lib/gcc/i486-linux-gnu/4.3.2/../../../../lib/crt1.o: In function `_start':
(.text+0x18): undefined reference to `main'

I don't know what to do with that. What is the difference between gcc-4.3 in ubuntu and debian?

Seems that the libtool should be updated. However I still dont understand, debian also didnt update their libtool and has built the package.

Forget about the libtool. Please disable ruby build and it is okay. I really have no clue why debian does not have problems and has the build.

Any hints on how to disble ruby bindings ?

I did change --with-ruby into --without-ruby in debian/rules and did rebuild with dpkg-buildpackage -rfakeroot -b

Another question is why intrepid has a binary package, but are not able to rebuild it... ?

I did not fully understand the right approach - should we compile the gdal package with gcc-4.2 ? This did not work for me (same error with the ruby bindings).

I don't use ruby, so I don't see that problem. What I do see is that the tests from gdal.org will segfault unless you build with gcc-4.2, at least on Intrepid. I don't have the same issue on Hardy.

Hi all,

Several users have reported over the past few weeks various crashes when
running GDAL, in particular in OGRFeature::GetFieldAsString(). It has been
finally identified that it was due to stricter guard logic in GCC that was
enabled in Ubuntu 8.10 and later versions because -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 is set
by default and is activated when -O is set to 2 or higher.
A similar issue was detected in DTEDDataset::CreateCopy() a few weeks ago and
was also fixed.

The fixes have been applied to current development version, 1.6 stable branch
and 1.5 branch. Please refer to http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/2896 and
http://trac.osgeo.org/gdal/ticket/2824 if you need to apply the relevant
patches without waiting for next stable releases.

However, it might be possible that similar issues still remain, especially in
less popular drivers, so please report it.
