Bug Description

Binary package hint: gcompris

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04, and Edubuntu addon 9.04. When I try to launch GCompris it appears in the task bar, and then just disappears. I do not get an error message or a reason why it happened.

Running it in a terminal shows the following. Maybe this will be useful to the Ubuntu developers.

$ gcompris
exec_prefix NULL
XF86VidMode: Compiled with XF86VidMode.
If you have problems starting GCompris in fullscreen, try the -x option to disable XF86VidMode.

Installing the "python-numeric" package resolves the problem.

This suggests two bugs in the gcompris package:

(1) gcompris is missing a dependency upon python-numeric

(2) python-numeric is marked as deprecated in favour of python-numpy, so presumably gcompris should be updated accordingly

If I understand correctly, a missing dependency is trivial to fix, so I think it should be feasible to fix this in jaunty-updates and also in karmic.

The latter issue (updating to python-numpy) would obviously require much more effort and should likely be addressed separately.
