"gcc --version" reports (french locale):

$ gcc --version
gcc (GCC) 4.2.3 (Ubuntu 4.2.3-2ubuntu7)

Unfortunately there's many errors in French translations of GNU apps (including gcc). I suggest to use such command line tools with LANG='C' or to remove corresponding *.mo files (in /usr/share/locale).
