Bug Description

Binary package hint: gcalctool

The buttons in gcalctool (5.31.90) are too big in Dutch (and possibly also in other languages), probably because they are designed to all take the width of the biggest button, which in Dutch is "Ongedaan maken" ("undo" in English). Because of the length of the Dutch translation, all buttons (including the ones with numbers and mathmatical symbols (+ - / * %) on them) are stretched to match the width of the undo-button (the widest one in Dutch). This makes the buttons far wider than they have to be (and as a result of that the window).

Well, assuming I'm correct about the size of the buttons automatically ajusting to the size of the largest button, I'd propose to exclude the numbers and mathmatical symbols from that procedure. It shouldn't matter, since they are the same symbols in all languages (correct me if I'm wrong).

So basically, the purple and red buttons would get a fixed width, while the grey, green and blue buttons keep their current behaviour, since their width can vary in different languages.

To clarify, I've make a small mockup showing what I'm proposing.

I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure if what I'm proposing is actually possible.

Seems like a wishlist. Should be marked as such.

I'm not sure where the line is drawn between a bug and a wishlist, but I don't think this was the intended behaviour for this application, and especially on small screens these big buttons make the calculator take up way too much space. I'm not saying this is a bug of the highest priority, but I do think it should be fixed one day.

This is a bug, it is the result of (Ubuntu Dutch Translators) not following the guidelines of this program in translating it. It also makes gcaltool pretty much unusable on netbooks. This issue has been known upstream for some time, I will send a mail to their list asking if they have decided on a better translation. In the mean time I have changed it to a shorter string ("Terug", or back) in LP, but I am not sure how long it will take before this translation is updated.

@Redmar: where are the "guidelines of this program" that weren't followed?

even uitgeprobeerd,
$ LANG=nl_NL.utf8 && gcalctool
instellen op financieel
dan is de knop tekst "Ongedaan Maken" erg groot
en waarschijnlijk de reden dat alle knoppen groot zijn

Sorry I replied to a mailinglist, not realizing it went straight to LP

I tried it out,
$ LANG=nl_NL.utf8 && gcalctool
set to financial
the undo button "Ongedaan Maken" is very big
and probably the reason why all buttons are so big

The translation that fixes this was uploaded to maverick-proposed yesterday, so this should be available in maverick-updates soon (maybe 1 week at most?).
