hi gahrb! I am also a Forerunner owner and had problems now and then.

Your problem could be caused by the fact that Ubuntu loads the driver "garmin_gps" when a Forerunner is plugged in. This is fine for software that uses it. But the garmin-forerunner-tools or gpsbabel have own routines to access a GPS and are blocked by the driver.

Try to plug-in your GPS, then remove the driver with "sudo modprobe -r garmin_gps", then use the garmin-forerunner-tools.

hi oliver,

unfortunately this didn't resolve the problem.
I removed the module ("lsmod | grep garmin" showed nothing), however the output of garmin_get_info still showed

"garmin unit could not be opened!"

I guess you also tried "sudo garmin_get_info"?
It that works then it could be a permission problem with your USB device. Otherwise I have no more ideas.

I see the same output, regardless of sudo:
====
ojw@tpx220:~$ sudo garmin_get_info
garmin unit could not be opened!
====
ojw@tpx220:~$ lsusb | grep Garmin

Some information here:

It seems to mount by mass storage, under "/media/GARMIN".
