Unable to connect to my forerunner10.

hi gahrb! I am also a Forerunner owner and had problems now and then.
Your problem could be caused by the fact that Ubuntu loads the driver "garmin_gps" when a Forerunner is plugged in. This is fine for software that uses it. But the garmin- forerunner- tools or gpsbabel have own routines to access a GPS and are blocked by the driver.
Try to plug-in your GPS, then remove the driver with "sudo modprobe -r garmin_gps", then use the garmin- forerunner- tools.
