Bug Description
The galternatives window has three buttons, one with a page with a plus sign, one with a gear, and one with a circle-crossout.
1. None of these buttons appear to do anything when clicked.
2. There should be a tooltip for each of the buttons that tell what they're supposed to do. I can guess that the left-most is supposed to add a new alternative, the gear is supposed to save the work, and I don't know what the cross-out one is supposed to do...delete the current selection? There is no help or other explanation, either in the gui or in the man page.

Thanks for reporting, but I can't confirm this in Ubuntu Precise/12.04. All of the buttons are labeled ("Add" "Properties" "Delete") and function properly. What version of Ubuntu (and galternatives) are you using?
